Part of my new collection of bags, scarves and T shirts. Each bag features the name and address of a well known type foundry followed by the dates they were in business. This bag (all the bags are hand made with heavy weight canvas) features Stephenson Blake, one of the last remaining type foundries (together with DeLittle of York). These bags will be available in Japan and in the UK from the Design Museum and PRESENT (Shoreditch High Street).

This wonderful wood type arrived from the USA last week - no sooner was it unpacked then it was straight to work. The original design for this font dates back to 1838. Yet it looks so incredibly fresh and contemporary. I designed a bag for the up coming (starts November 2011) CONRAN exhibition at the Design Museum last week and then used this font for a fun poster (it was just for me, it won't be on sale at the design museum), it's a real joy to print with.

It's been a busy few months here at A TWO PIPE PROBLEM. First Liberty started stocking my greetings cards in June in the stationery department now the V&A have started stocking prints... I'm so happy to be in these great shops. Other news at the moment (and the main reason for the long gap between blogs) is that I've been approached to design a collection of canvas bags, t shirts and scarves for a Japanese wholesaler, so I've been designing (and scanning) like mad to come up with 20 designs. I think I'm just about finished & the samples will hopefully be ready in about 10 days. It's also meant creating a logo and thus 'a label'. Exciting times. Quite possibly the most exciting project of the last 2 years - and that's saying something... keep your eyes pealed...

I Don't normally make a fuss on my blog about new font additions, but this wonderful 18 Line Fat Face is a thing of very rare beauty. This is 'Basuto' designed by Stephenson Blake in the 1940s. The fat face ensures plenty of end grain and it cleaned up a treat, check the close up of the figs. I also have a condensed 16 Line which I've already used for an edition - it'll be posted in an up coming blog. I hope you'll agree, there is no better way to start the week than by feasting the eyes upon such beauty.

This is an imaginary LP cover made up & designed by me for my good friend Ric.

First the imaginary band.
Black Water's debut LP 'Winter Sun' What do they sound like? Well, I think they're heavy minimal metal with all male acapella moments.

Now the font.
The top font is a 20 Line (just over 3 inches) German Blackletter font. Designed in 1939, 'Element' was part of a family of minimal blackletter fonts collectively known as 'Jackboot' fonts. Sounds shocking. It was later banded in 1943 by the Nazi party for looking 'to Jewish'. What a history... Surely the most 'loaded' font I have.

First the FARLEY, a 1940s proofing press with adjustable settings for galley & type, very handy to get the pressure 'just right'. With a bed size of 18" x 26".
Now the print, 'WHATEVER IT IS YOU'RE LOOKING FOR YOU WON'T FIND IT HERE'. A little piece of ironic reverse physiology. Or 'The Truth'.

The second installment of Jazz LPs designed and printed here! The cover is set in Gallia - both font and ornaments date from the mid 1930s, giving the record a nice inter-war feel. Semi ironic I like to say! The music ranges from abstract Jazz to ballads (my favourites). I was keen to keep the design minimal in keeping with the lonesome title.
